Which Wolf Wins? The Choice is Yours.

A Story of Two Wolves

One evening, an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. The grandfather said: “My son, there is a battle in all of us between two wolves. One wolf is evil. It is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other wolf is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.” The grandson thought about it for a minute. He then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf wins?”

The old Cherokee simply replied: “The one you feed.”

What Law Enforcement Faces Daily

As members of the law enforcement community, you have ample opportunity to witness the worst our society has to offer. Evil is ever present and police officers are seldom (or never) called to a home or a business because something good has happened! And the more I think about it, none of us can escape the steady offering of evil and all of its manifestations that surround us on a daily basis. All we have to do is turn on our television and it is presented to us in high definition with colorful commentary.

What Happens When You Feed the Wrong Wolf

If we are not careful, we can become cynical, pessimistic and distrustful all the time, toward everyone. Not necessarily because we want to, but because of what we are being fed!

Choose to Focus on the Good

To help prevent this from happening, let me encourage you to make the opportunity to focus on the good! Even when you are on duty, take some time every so often to look for the good in our community. Reflect upon the blessings of your faith, your family and your friends. AND then, when you are away from the department, make an extra effort to enjoy life!

Feed the Right Wolf

The Scripture puts it this way: Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Scripture also reminds us: As a man thinks in his soul, so is he. In other words, “the wolf you feed wins!”
